We started receiving questions moments after the hybrid-learning decision was made at the Lawrence Board of Education meeting. “What will we do with our children on the days they are not in school?” We want to provide a safe, positive place for as many youth as possible, but we also must follow strict safety guidelines.
As students prepare to return to school, available space is extremely limited and information is ever-changing. When one factor changes, we must pivot our plans. That causes more delays in relaying information to you. Please grant us grace as we fervently research our next steps.
What Happens Now?
- Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCLK) will open all-day programming to reflect the hybrid-learning model as soon as we can successfully transition from the distance-learning program to the hybrid program. The start date will be announced shortly. This program will be open to a LIMITED number of members at a LIMITED number of locations. These locations will likely be off-site facilities in the community.
- BGCLK’s distance-learning programs (elementary and teens) will end on Thursday, October 15. Custodial staff at Lawrence Public Schools need time to deep clean facilities before welcoming USD 497 students back into their buildings for hybrid learning on Monday, October 19.
- Despite our operations model being geared toward before- and after-school programs, we believe that continuing all-day programs is the best way to serve families at this time. The goal is to provide a safe, positive place during their children’s off-school days. In order to adhere to the safest social distancing between BGCLK and Lawrence Public Schools, we cannot provide all-day programs AND after-school programs at this time.
- That means, we will not yet be able to honor the after-school enrollment that was completed by parents/guardians in May. We are working on a new enrollment process to implement for the hybrid-learning all-day programs. Please watch your email closely for hybrid enrollment info.
