"I learned how to make omletes and rice krispie treats at Boys & Girls Club. My mom was really happy and proud of me for learning how to bake stuff on my own.”

What grade were you in when you started coming to Boys & Girls Club?
“I started going to Boys & Girls Club in kindergarten when I was at Woodlawn. I was in BGC the whole time, but I stopped giong for a while in fourth and fifth grade. I came back when I got to middle school because I have more friends that go to the Teen Center, and I also have the chance to do more things.”

When you first started coming to the Teen Center, what did you think of it?
“I thought it would be cool to have more friends that I could hang out and play games with. Now, I know even more people here. I probably wouldn’t know the friends I have from other schools, like Central and South, if I didn’t come here.”

You used to walk home when you were in fourth and fifth grade – so you definitely could now – why do you choose to come to the Teen Center instead?
“There’s a lot more that I could do here than at home. I love hanging out with my friends, getting to do fun activities and going on field trips. Sky Zone was probably my favorite field trip at the Teen Center, and we went to a Royals game when I was at Woodlawn.”

Of all the fun activities you mention, which ones are the best?
“We do this thing where we play poker with candy or tickets. That, basketball and cooking. My mom likes to cook and I like to cook with her. We try to make things like pancakes or other things that are easy for me. I learned how to make omletes and rice krispie treats at Boys & Girls Club. What “Clubs within The Club” do you participate in?
“I’m in Science Club right now. We do basic experiments. Things like putting vinegar and baking soda in a plastic bag. It fizzled with air at first and eventually it exploded open. Before that I was in the Gamer Club. That’s still going on, but I decided to try something different.”

What is your favorite spot in the whole building?
“I’d say the area by the couch where you play video games. I also like ping-pong and Nine Squares in the Air. That whole corner, really.”

Which of your Boys & Girls Club friends can make you laugh the hardest?
“Probably Kyle, Alaysia, Jada, Kaiser or Maya. Ms. Amy calls me and Kyle ‘Fric and Frac.’ Kyle goes to South and I go to West. We see each other everyday after school here. We started being friends in the middle of last summer at Boys & Girls Club.”

Do other kids try to tell you that Boys & Girls Club is lame? Why would you go there? What would you say to them about that?
“It’s a lot more fun than what it might look like. It’s the same as,‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ Because you never really know what it’s like until you actually try it.”

What would happen if stopped going to Boys & Girls Club after school?
“I wouldn’t have as much fun, and I wouldn’t be as happy. My mom always says that I never have homework because I always finish it as Boys & Girls Club.”
