LAWRENCE, Kan. – ‘A Night With Our Heroes’ is a virtual fundraiser, starring four Boys & Girls Club kids and teens interviewing a personal hero in their own lives. The lineup of heroes is almost as impressive as their young interviewers, including Kansas Governor Laura Kelly.

The online-only event takes place on Friday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m. A $25 registration fee is required to sign up and watch the show. Like many businesses and nonprofits, Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence has gotten inventive in order to raise funds during the damaging COVID-19 pandemic.

‘A Night With Our Heroes’ was created to celebrate the power of positive role models. The Boys & Girls Club thrives on developing meaningful relationships between youth and caring adults. Knowing someone believes in you and your potential is vital for all young people. Club staff and volunteers strive to become positive role models in the lives of the youth they mentor at the Club.

Presented by Form & Function, the ‘Heroes’ event represents a unique opportunity to see heroes in our community through the eyes of a child. Governor Kelly highlights an extraordinary list, which includes the brilliant mind behind Google Earth, Brian McClendon; Lawrence Master Teacher and Kansas Master Teacher finalist, Nicole Corn; and Kansas Basketball legend turned-NBA-coach, Aaron Miles. Each was paired with a Club kid who looks up to them, and made a list of questions for their heroes to answer. What resulted is series of interviews totaling approximately one hour, including the emcee talents provided by the Voice of the Jayhawks, Brian Hanni.

“Being a positive role model in the life of a child is the ultimate goal at the Boys & Girls Club,” Boys & Girls Club CEO, Monica Dittmer, said. “I am inspired by this remarkable group, because they understand how important mentoring truly is. Each of them found a way to answer all the questions our kids had for them, and truly give them their time and attention. These four ‘heroes’ are positive role models in my own life, but it’s a totally new perspective to see them in this light.”

While the interviewees may have more name recognition, it’s the interviewers who will likely steal the show. Governor Kelly will be interviewed by Khloe, a Woodlawn Elementary third grader. Nicole Corn’s interviewer is Hadley, her former student and a first grader at Sunset Hill Elementary. Brian McClendon sat down with Pranav Vogeti, the 2021 Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence Youth of the Year, for their interview. Aaron Miles will be grilled by his buddy, Myles, a third grader at Broken Arrow Elementary.

To ensure all COVID-19 safety regulations are upheld, each interview is conducted with the hero appearing on Zoom, speaking with the Club kid in-person at the Center for Great Futures. The video team at Moonblind Productions is capturing all the action.
