Strategies

Staff Recruitment, Development, and Retention

Staff Recruitment
  1. Attend local high school and college orientations, job fairs and club fairs and addition utilize marketing and networking websites that are directed toward working professionals
  2. Contact and develop a relationship with a local college’s School of Education with the intent of incorporating Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence employment into student graduation requirements
  3. Recruit new staff via Club families and USD 497 staff
  4. Specific efforts are made to recruit a diverse staff reflective of the youth served

 

Staff Development
  1. Continue development and streamlining of onboarding process to ensure all staff receive job-specific training and are required to complete training milestones in their first year of employment
    1. In onboarding include exposure to BGCLK’s ongoing commitment to Diversity and Equity. This may include any active committees or initiatives and their purpose.
  2. Develop a plan to continue part-time and full-time staff training after the first 12 months of employment and secure funding to support implementation
  3. Full-time staff observe and adopt best practices and program implementation used at other sites to confirm that each site is on the same timeline for delivery of programs and accountability to protocols/procedures

 

Staff Retention
  1. Conduct regular pulse checks, focus groups, and exit surveys with staff to get feedback on retention; develop, as needed, incentive plans to motivate staff

Social-Emotional Support

Increase the reach of Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence’s Social-Emotional Support team to better serve members’ diverse social-emotional needs
  1. Secure consistent, annual funding to hire additional support staff and train current support staff
  2. Establish new community partnerships in mental health, education, and social welfare fields to support program staff
  3. Incorporate a behavioral needs assessment section in the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence enrollment packet to better serve Club members’ social-emotional needs
  4. Be aware of and offer continued education as pertains to the specific dire needs of the larger community, including but not limited to, a global pandemic, mental health issues, social emotional skill gaps, and equity/racial injustices
    1. As necessary, maintain smaller staff to member ratios in these situations to better position BGCLK to provide appropriate Social-Emotional response

 

Workforce Readiness

Increase the occurrence and the tracking of career exploration activities in elementary Clubs (K-5th grades)
  1. Add a career exploration unit to Project Learn programming
Engage community partners in expanding the workforce readiness program for teens (6th-12th grades)

Create a Consistent High-Quality Club Experience based on Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Five Key Elements

Opportunities & Fun
  1. Research and evaluate the need for traditional Boys & Girls Clubs of America leadership roles and responsibilities to further enhance programming opportunities community partnerships, parent engagement events, field trips, etc. locally at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence
  2. Strengthen current BGCA and grant-based targeted programs & technology (USD 497) access at sites
    1. A special emphasis will be placed on the issue of access to technology as an equity issue for BGCLK members
Safe, positive environment, Supportive Relationships, Expectations & Recognition
  1. Standardize BGCLK’s policy for behavior management and utilizing consistent recognition to foster a safe, positive environment and build supportive relationships throughout the organization
    1. Continue to utilize site observation tool to assess progress, while being open to modifications as necessary
