Blue Santa Program Supporting Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence to Fuel Student Success

04-02-26

LAWRENCE, KS – The Lawrence Police Department’s Blue Santa program is proud to announce a new partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCLK) to provide daily snacks for students in the afterschool program. This initiative ensures that local children from kindergarten through fifth grade have the energy they need to thrive during afternoon activities.

Since its inception in 2011, the Blue Santa program has been a cornerstone of community support in Douglas County. While the non-profit originally focused on providing holiday gifts and Christmas meals, it has evolved into a year-round mission to build positive community connections and provide aid through officer referrals and local donations. This donation, Blue Santa’s key initiative for 2026.

Focusing on the “Afterschool Gap”

For many students, the hours between the end of the school day and dinner are the most active. BGCLK offers a wide array of sports, academic tutoring, and social programs, but empty stomachs can be a major barrier to participation.

“It is difficult for a child to focus on a group activity or enjoy a game of basketball if they are hungry,” said Laci Maltbie, Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence CEO. “By providing these snacks, Blue Santa is ensuring kids can fully engage in everything we have to offer. It’s more than just food; it’s about giving them the energy to learn, play, and grow. We’re so grateful to Ret. Sgt.  Laurie Powell and Prairie Park Unit Director Ori Perez for connecting and making this support a reality.”

Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence staff see this as another way the Lawrence Police Department is strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the city’s youth, fostering an environment of trust and mutual support.
