Jazmyne McNair Captures 2016 Lawrence Youth of the Year Crown
An elegant evening owned by three inspiring candidates shined a spotlight on the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence and its annual Youth of the Year event. Nearly 400 people came to watch the three young women give heartfelt speeches before the panel of judges named Jazmyne McNair the 2016 Lawrence Youth of the Year.
Liberty Hall set the perfect stage to host the premier event. This year’s Lawrence showcase featured Lawrence Free State senior Marcya’ Floyd, Lawrence High senior Verneisha Jackson and McNair, a junior at Lawrence High. McNair will now advance to the Kansas Youth of the Year competition in Topeka on March 1.
“I feel so accomplished and so thankful for the people who have given their time into helping me get here,” McNair beamed after her emotional acceptance speech.
Not So Late Show Host, Mike Anderson, emceed the celebration that is a culmination of not only months of hard work by the candidates and their mentors – but also life-long relationships that kids develop with the Boys & Girls Club. A national event, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America began the Youth of the Year program in 1947. Those who earn the Youth of the Year title embody the values of leadership service, academic excellence and healthy lifestyles. Locally, candidates exemplify the powerful impact that the Boys & Girls Club has on kids in Lawrence.
